Warsaw Spire Lobby

One of Europe’s largest office developments in recent years, the Warsaw Spire complex developed in downtown Warsaw by Belgian real estate company Ghelamco includes the newly-built 220 meter Warsaw Spire “A” tower, the tallest and most modern office building in Poland and the new offices of many international prime corporate tenants. Massive Design, led by chief architect and designer Mac Stopa, was commissioned to design the tower’s lobby and common areas.

About the tower project Mac Stopa said, “It’s a project I like very much because of its visual unity combined with complexity of design and product development. I designed nearly all the elements in the tower’s lobby and common areas. I incorporated finishes I designed for serial production and coordinated them with custom interior solutions, which allowed me to create the dynamic flow of organic geometries throughout the space, in particular on the walls, floors, ceiling and furniture, achieving an overall effect of harmony and design unity.”

The lobby’s concrete structural walls are covered with organic-shaped Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) shells giving a futuristic character to the space. Walls are slanted and organically connected with the ceilings, which have built-in custom molded illumination slots. The suspended Y-shaped white ceiling elements, prefabricated using molding techniques, tessellate in an organic pattern on the contrasting black background.

Entering the lobby through the building’s main entrance, visitors stand on the black polished Nero Assoluto granite floor that leads to the front desk. The floor and front desk form an artistic installation where the black granite is sculptured into the desk shaped like a flying carpet creating a dynamic effect. The main wall behind the desk is composed from hundreds of custom designed 3D GRG tiles with several meters long illuminated Warsaw Spire logo.

Lobby floors are finished in Laminam’s 6 mm Star Maker large format quartz tiles designed by Mac Stopa and winner of a Red Dot Design Award Best of the Best 2016. The Star Maker pattern is composed from a smaller scale 3D pentagonal geometry organized in a hexagonal shading effect creating the unusual effect of large scale luminous circles on the floor.

The several thousand corporate employees and visitors passing through the lobby sit and chat or just relax on one of sixty Drum armchairs and poufs designed by Mac Stopa for Cappellini. Their fronts are finished with Bi-elastic upholstery with Mac’s 3D Cube pattern. Aesthetic and functional, the graphics help protect Drum from acquiring visible signs of intensified commercial usage.

An organic-shaped futuristic entrance leads to elevator cabins finished in black glass, mirrors and polished stainless steel. Thanks to multiple reflections, cabin space appears larger than it is. The custom designed ceiling is made from mirror and illuminated LEDs in a Y-shape, repeating the Y-shape in the lobby’s modular ceiling.

Using a similar language of expression as the flooring and ceiling, ground floor and mezzanine glass balustrades are decorated with 3D graphics with tessellating pentagonal geometry that gradually gets lighter the higher its position on the glass. In 2017 Warsaw Spire Lobby won Red Dot Design Award in Interior Architecture and Interior Design category for office buildings and the entire Warsaw Spire complex won MIPIM AWARD in Best Office and Business Development. www.warsawspire.pl
